Northeast Nebraska RC&D Learned of Rural Health Department Work

At a recent meeting of the Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council they heard from Roger Wiese, Director of the North Central District Health Department located in O’Neill.  He gave a brief history of how and why the public health departments were created in Nebraska.  They started in 2001 and were funded initially in all 93 counties with payout from the tobacco industry lawsuit.  His office covers 9 counties: Cherry, Brown, Rock, Keya Paha, Boyd, Antelope, Pierce, Holt, and Knox.  Some of their programs include Emergency Management Preparedness, mental health issues, substance abuse, natural disasters, and public health symptoms.  Much of their work involves collecting data and information and then acting on it.   He explained that their Miles of Smiles program, which offers oral screening and fluoride varnish for elementary and middle school students in the district, is seeing an improvement with the children’s dental issues.

Jan Jorgensen, Projects Manager, reported that the grant writing workshop held recently was successful with 34 people attending from 23 communities.  They were excited to learn of the granting opportunities that exist and were glad for the chance to meet some of the funders.  Sensitive document shredding events will take place May 8th and 9th in the six communities of Orchard, Creighton, Plainview, Ponca, Hartington and Wayne.  Electronics Recycling is still be planned for this summer with times and locations to be announced.

Northeast Nebraska RC&D announced today that it will receive $24,134.00 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the “Integrated Management of Noxious Weeds in Biologically Sensitive Areas by the Northeast Nebraska Weed Management Area”. The Trust Board announced funding for the project at its meeting on April 3, 2014 in Lincoln. This is the third and final year of award. Invasive species are cited frequently as significant threats to biological diversity in Nebraska’s Natural Legacy Project planning document (NNLP). To address issues with invasive species, NNLP recommended development of collaborative conservation efforts to implement strategies that address specific issues in biologically unique landscapes (BUL’s) identified in the plan. One such group is the Northeast Nebraska Weed Management Area (NNWMA).  NNWMA is composed of a diverse group of partners and covers 8 counties and 4,610,212 acres of private, public, and tribal land. Eight BUL’s are partially or wholly within NNWMA boundaries.  These include prairies that contain federally threatened Western Prairie Fringed Orchid and state listed Small White Lady Slipper Orchid, as well as habitats that are home to 34 other Tier 1 plant, mussel, fish, insect, bird, and mammal species.

Northeast Nebraska RC&D Grant Writing Workshop a Success

A one-day Grant Writing Workshop held April 17th in Plainview was attended by thirty-four individuals from twenty-three communities.  They represented a wide-variety of disciplines including economic developers, hospital staff, city administrators, community volunteers, a housing manager, a tribal representative, non-profit entities, a university scientist, and a librarian.

Jan Jorgensen, RC&D staff member, shared grant writing basics and tips on what she’s learned over twenty-one years of writing grants.  Being successful takes a well-identified need, the right funder, the right project written in a clear and easily understood method, and good partners.  She told the group that persistence does pay off and “You won’t die if you don’t get the grant, but you certainly won’t get it unless you submit one.”

Mike Marty and Tom McCauley with the Nebraska Arts Council told of the variety of programs and services they offer through their state agency as well as the many granting opportunities available.  Mary Yager, Humanities Nebraska, updated the group on their granting programs as well as their speakers’ bureau.  They too are a state agency and share similarities to the Nebraska Arts Council, but their grants do not require matching cash.  Heather Hogue, Nebraska Tourism Office offered insight into their two grant programs – the Tourism Marketing grant and a newer one called the Tourism Community Impact grants.
