Jim and Pearl Laycock, local entrepreneurs and vegetable growers, will be the market managers. They are well-versed in the operation of a farmers market and have participated in the Pierce market for a number of years.
The market will run through the growing season which should end approximately September 30th. Hours of operation will be Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until noon. Those interested in becoming vendors or who would like more information may contact the Laycocks at 402-582-3334, or the RC&D office at 402-582-4866 or via email [email protected].
The local foods movement is important to the RC&D because the rural area being served is highly dependent on agriculture. It is widely accepted that locally grown food and fresh, whole foods are best for health and are the best value in purchasing food.
This project will hopefully grow new farmers’ market vendors and increase local food access for area citizens. Anything that can be done to encourage citizens to take advantage of purchasing and eating the food grown right in their own locale is a plus – not only for them, but for those growing it.
